Understanding the Hoover Dam Bypass
& U.S. 93 Improvements

When complete in 2010, the $240 million Hoover Dam Bypass Project will include a route 1,500 feet downstream of the Hoover Dam featuring 3.5 miles of new four-lane, divided highway and a 2,000 foot-long bridge that will cross the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. This new wider bypass and bridge will tie into existing U.S. 93 on the east and west, addressing a number of traffic congestion and safety concerns.

Built in 1936, the original two-lane U.S. Highway 93 crosses the Colorado River on the top of Hoover Dam, a National Historic Landmark. U.S. 93 is a major commerce and travel link between adjoining states and countries; some 17,000 cars a day travel on this two-lane section.
